It goes towards equipment, etc for the police department that seized it. (First degree was Forensic's =) ) Just popped in and saying hello, so hello!!
The money is held as evidence until after the completion of the trial. Following conviction, the money is released to the arresting agency and used for equipment, money for purchases in undercover investigations, expenses relating to having helicopters come in and do aerial searches for marijuana fields, paying spotters for aerials searches, etc.
Fifteen years as a newspaper reporter covering law enforcement taught me something.
Use it to buy their own drugs.
The Lee police dept. drives around in brand new Dodge Chargers. Business is good!
